    What is Kumbh Mela?

Kumbh Mela is a colossal event with the largest gathering of people in the world. It is held every 6, 12, or 144 years, marking a rare celestial alignment.

The word ‘kumbh’ refers to a pitcher containing the elixir that occurred during ‘Sagar Manthan’ or the churning of cosmic ocean. The elixir was known to have powers of granting immortality to anyone who drank it.

There was a huge battle over the elixir of immortality and during this battle the drops of elixir fell on four places, namely- Prayagraj, Ujjain, Nashik, and Haridwar.

This year’s festival is called “Maha” Kumbh Mela since it is a once in 144 years event. The 2019 Kumbh Mela witnessed around 20 crore people who attended the event.

This epic Hindu pilgrimage is celebrated on the Indian river banks in four cities: Nashik, Ujjain, Haridwar, and Prayagraj.
