Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, is a major Hindu festival celebrated every year towards the end of Durga Puja and Navratri. Dussehra 2025 will be celebrated on October 2nd.
‘Dussehra’ is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘dasama’ and ‘ahar’ which means tenth day. On the other hand, ‘Vijayadashami’ denotes ‘vijay’ meaning victory and ‘dashami’ meaning tenth day. Together, they connote the celebration of victory of good over evil on the tenth day.
Significance of Dussehra
The festival of Dasara is celebrated differently in different parts of India and Nepal. In some northern, northeastern, southern, and eastern states, it is celebrated to mark Maa Durga’s victory over Mahishasura.

Whereas, in the northern, western, and central parts of India, it is celebrated to mark Lord Rama’s victory over the evil Ravana.

On the other hand, Lord Rama believers mark this occasion by enacting in Ramleela plays and burning Ravana’s effigy with fireworks.
