    Varalakshmi Festival Significance

Varalakshmi or Varamahalakshmi puja is celebrated primarily in South India by married women on the Friday before the full moon (poornima) during the Hindu month of Shravana.

It is celebrated to honour Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. Varalakshmi is the manifestation of Goddess Lakshmi, who grants boons (varam).

South Indian women celebrate Varalakshmi Vratam to please the goddess of prosperity and seek blessings for their own health and longevity as well as that of their husbands.

Varamahalakshmi festival is quite popular in South Indian states like Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.

It is one of the most auspicious days to worship Goddess Lakshmi and seek her blessings. Both men and women are supposed to observe the fast during this period. However, mainly women participate in the ceremony in South Indian cities.

A kalasha is placed in front of Goddess Lakshmi’s idol, and a rangoli is made in the puja room. The kalasha is decorated with chandan (sandalwood), flowers, and mango leaves.

Auspicious items such as betel leaves, rice, turmeric sticks, bananas, and Mahalaxmi coins are placed inside the kalasha.

The ceremony begins with chanting shlokas and performing aarti before Goddess Lakshmi. Women tie yellow threads on their wrists and exchange sweets and gifts.
